Meet our new recruits – Matt Trowell, Dan Cubbon, and Matthew Thompson

In recent months, GGS has been very lucky to recruit three excellent new Geo-Environmental Specialists to the team. Here they tell us a little about themselves and what they hope to achieve in their new roles with GGS.

Matt Trowell, Geo-Environmental Specialist

Tell us a little about yourself

I am a recent graduate from UEA where I studied human geography focusing on urban development and climate change. Within my university experience I completed a year in industry as a sustainability management trainee. In this role, my focus was on environmental compliance, audits, waste, single use plastic and the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS – which I can talk about for hours!) Returning to university and completing my degree, I enhanced my environmental experience by becoming an Assistant Environmental and Sustainability Advisor, focussing on environmental compliance and law.

What made you want to join GGS?

I have unfortunately worked for some companies where I felt underappreciated and overworked. It’s from this experience that GGS drew me in. They have been a great example of how a company should be, supporting staff, encouraging career progression, being valued, and working together towards a greater goal. The positive attitude and culture is what made me want to join and it has not disappointed!

What aspects of the job are you looking forward to?

I can honestly say I am enjoying all aspects of work thus far. I love being on site, getting hands on, engaging with different site personalities, and thinking on my feet. I enjoy the travel which a lot of people may be surprised by. Behind the site experience, I also enjoy desk work. Organising jobs, interpreting data, data entry – it’s all good.

What are your interests outside work?

Outside of my career and education, I am an avid cinema enthusiast. I listen to a lot of music, mainly R&B, DNB, rap and indie. I dabble in a fair few sports ranging from running, badminton, football, fishing, boxing, and the gym. I like engaging in new challenges like jumping out of planes and hiking up three peaks in twenty four hours. That pretty much sums me up 😊

Dan Cubbon, Graduate Geo-Environmental Specialist

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Dan and I’m from Leyland in Lancashire. I currently live in Liverpool, which is where I studied. I am really pleased to have graduated with a BSc Geography degree at the University of Liverpool. My new role at GGS is my very first, and although this is my first full-time job, I’m really looking forward to the challenges working life will bring.

What made you want to join GGS?

I joined GGS as I understand the importance of our work here and wanted a rewarding role in a sector that interests me.

What aspects of the job are you looking forward to?

I look forward to developing my site skills and understanding more about techniques used to monitor ground gas.

What are your interests outside work?

I enjoy music, regularly going to gigs and festivals in my spare time.

Matthew Thompson, Graduate Geo-Environmental Specialist

Tell us a little about yourself

I live in the Peak District in a small village called Chinley and went to college in Stockport at Aquinas. I then completed an environmental science degree at the University of Manchester and then a masters at Manchester Metropolitan in Conservation Biology. I was working at Tesco at the same time.

What made you want to join GGS?

I wanted to join GGS as I was interested in the company’s innovation and expertise in the gas monitoring field. This was brought to my interest by my masters dissertation project, when I studied the gas fluxes from two wetland plant species using specialist equipment similar to GGS. Click here to find out more about this project.

What aspects of the job are you looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to the dynamic working environment, splitting time between office work and site visits. I also enjoy the travel aspect and hands on site work. I am also looking forward to expanding the knowledge I gained throughout university by continuing my professional development.

What are your interests outside work?

I enjoy spending a lot of time at the gym and going to the cinema.

The following pages include news articles, videos, guidance notes and white papers on a range of ground gas related topics which we hope you will find of interest.
