What is the risk of Radon?

Radon gas is created through the natural decay of minerals from rocks and soils. Normally it can escape through the air, but when it is trapped inside buildings or enclosed spaces it poses a significant risk.

Radon is a gas that we can’t see, smell or feel and yet exposure is risky for building occupants . Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and is a major public health concern. This is why it’s so important to raise a conversation about the gas and work towards reducing everyone’s exposure.

The Radon Map

The UK radon map is one of the best tools for understanding risk. It allows you to see a map of the whole of the United Kingdom and highlights radon affected areas. Levels for buildings are usually low, but seeing areas of high risk can be useful  for evaluating the kind of due-diligence required.

On the map, the darker the colours highlight  a higher chance of higher radon levels. From here, you can decide whether further action is needed if you’re concerned about radon levels in your property. Explore the map here.

Free Radon Webinar

Last year we ran a free radon webinar exploring the importance of measuring radon and to implement safety measures. Led by Andrew Brunton this webinar covers a vast array of knowledge that can help you increase your awareness of radon and how you might potentially mitigate the risk in your building.

You can watch this and any of our past webinars on our YouTube channel.

A radon blog

One of our most popular blogs explores the topic of radon. Published a couple of years ago, Radon: the hazard and managing the risk investigates what radon is, how you go about testing it and how you can manage radon exposure in your building.

GGS guidance paper

This year we published a guidance document exploring what the duties of an employer are for understanding and managing radon risk. GGS Guidance: Radon in the UK Workplace – Employers’ Duties is a guidance document that investigates how the UK Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 were established to protect workers from the harmful effects of radon when accumulated in workplace environments.

In this short paper we explore these regulations to understanding radon and risk levels. We also outline all of the different responsibilities you may have as an employer and how you can address and mitigate risk in your workplace. Download it here.

The Radon Council

The Radon Council is an independent self-regulatory body for the radon protection industry. They regularly publish updates on radon, including training and events.

Our technical director, John Naylor, is chair of the Radon Council and regularly attends meetings to advise on radon. If you would like to consider membership or want access to their resources, visit their website here. New members are joining regularly including businesses who are HSE recognised  from the Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) Body in the UK.
