GGS provided the following services:
Project
GGS were commissioned by Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA) to carry out a detailed review of existing desk-based information, a gas ingress survey of southern anchorage chambers and a borehole investigation to ascertain if existing health & safety procedures were appropriate. The chambers are located within rocks that are known to contain oil shales and methane.
Due to the perceived hazards, increased Health & Safety measures were carried out under high risk confined space procedures operating under a permit to work with standby rescue team.
Continuous gas monitoring was utilised to ascertain the ground-gas regime under a range of atmospheric conditions both in the anchorage chambers and within external monitoring wells for key hazardous gases including methane and carbon dioxide.
The investigation also included a thorough gas ingress survey using high resolution methane / flammable and hazardous gas instrumentation to locate even small gas ingress to the anchorage chambers.
A detailed interpretative ground-gas risk assessment report was written along with a confined spaces assessment and preparation of revised policy and procedures for FETA to operate. These works provided robust compliance safety data for site operators and allowed safe progression of planned maintenance works.
